8th Museums of Kenya Science Expo, 2025
During the Official opening of the 8th National Museums of Kenya Science Expo, 2025. The Expo is a platform that brings together researchers, scientists, innovators and heritage champions from across the country and beyond. The 2025 Expo’s theme, “Economic Transformation Through Heritage Conservation”, aligns powerfully with the Government’s development priorities, particularly the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BeTA).
The Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Gender, Culture and Children Services, Mrs. Hannah W. Cheptumo, commissioned two groundbreaking National Museums of Kenya research outputs; The Indigenous Knowledge Management System (IKMS), also known as the Indigenous Knowledge Innovation Bank (InKiBank), and the Book of Proceedings of the 1st Joint International Scientific Conference 2024. The IKMS is a continental first—a national digital repository interlinked with 13 county-level repositories designed to preserve, protect, and commercialize indigenous knowledge across five key areas: traditional food, medicine, technologies, heritage sites and cultural expressions.
The Science Expo highlights how heritage can be a dynamic engine of economic transformation. The Ministry is proud to support initiatives such as the Indigenous Knowledge Documentation and Digitization (IK Dodi), which lays the groundwork for knowledge-based industries rooted in our communities’ wisdom. These initiatives not only preserve Kenya's cultural wealth but also create pathways for research-driven innovation, value addition and employment.
